Why Can’t I Type on My PDF?

The “Dead Document” Problem:
When someone scans a paper document, the scanner takes a photo of it. Even though it is saved as a PDF, it does not contain “text” that a computer can read. It is essentially a flat image, like a JPEG inside a PDF wrapper.

Standard PDF readers (like Adobe Reader or Chrome) won’t let you type on these files because they don’t see any “form fields.”

To fix this, you don’t need to convert the file or buy OCR software. You simply need a tool that writes on top of the page. That is exactly what FillPDFNow does.

How to Fill Out a Scanned Form

Follow these 3 simple steps to add text, dates, or signatures to any flat PDF file.

Step 1

Open the Online Editor

Go to the homepage and upload your scanned file. We support huge files, so high-resolution scans are no problem.

Step 2

Select the “Text” Tool

Since there are no blinking cursors to click on, you must create your own. Select the “Text” tool from the toolbar and click anywhere on the page to drop a text box.

Step 3

Type and Drag

Type your answer. You can then use your mouse to drag the text so it sits perfectly on the line. You can also change the font size to fit into small boxes.

💡 Pro Tip: Checkboxes
Scanned forms often have tiny checkboxes. Don’t try to type an “X” with your keyboard—it never aligns right. Use our dedicated Checkmark Tool to stamp a perfect X or checkmark instantly.

📠 Pro Tip: Need to Fax This Scan?

Scanned forms (like medical records or IRS forms) often need to be faxed back. You don’t need a machine to do it.

Handling Signatures & Dates

If the document is a scan, you definitely can’t use a “digital ID” to sign it. You need a graphical signature.

  • Signatures: Use the “Sign” tool to draw your signature with your mouse or trackpad. Learn more in our guide on how to sign a PDF online.
  • Dates: Don’t hand-write the date. Use the “Date” tool to stamp today’s date cleanly.

Can I turn a Scan into a Fillable Form?

If you want to convert the scan so that *other* people can fill it out easily, that is a different process called “Form Creation.” We have a guide on how to make a PDF fillable if you are the one creating the forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to upload my scanned papers?

Yes. We use 256-bit encryption for uploads, and our auto-delete system wipes your file from our servers shortly after you download it.

Why is my scanned PDF so blurry?

This usually happens if the scanner was set to “Low Quality” or “Email Mode.” Our editor will preserve whatever quality you upload, but we cannot improve a blurry image.

Can I do this on my iPhone?

Absolutely. Since you often take photos of documents with your phone, it makes sense to edit them there too. See our guide on filling PDFs on Mobile.
